#SocialArtisting

#SocialArtisting is an artistic response to the COVID-19 pandemic with a mission to build community as we navigate a new normal. With uncertainty comes a range of emotions. This project provides an opportunity to reflect through journaling, process through movement, and collaborate in an artistic process that continues to evolve with each iteration.

Movement In Movies: Series 1

Pairing choreography with the addition of live image capture using a Kinect, the dancers create a connection of what the past, present, and future bring to the art of ballet.

MIM Series 1 was performed in a manmade cave as a part of the Speed Art Museum's "Art After Dark" programming in April 2015.

Dancers: Annie Honebrink and Phillip Velinov
Musician: Dane Waters
Tech Collaborators: Annie Mitchell and Jason Latta

“In its purest form, dance is an artistic expression of living in the moment. Like the present moment, live performance is fleeting. Inspired by Norman McLaren, Movement In Movies is an ongoing series that captures the essence of humanity as we become more reliant on technology.”
-Ashley Thursby

Movement In Movies: Series 2

Through the use of various camera angles and by rearranging the timing for the projection there is an interesting juxtaposition created between technology in the background, and the live artists in the foreground. This evokes both a longing to stay present and an awareness of how fleeting the present moment can be.

MIM Series 2 was supported by and filmed at the Louisville Ballet studios in April 2016.

Dancers: Annie Honebrink and Phillip Velinov
Videographer: Michael Kopp
Musicians: Dane Waters and AJ Cornell
Photographer: Sam English

Movement In Movies: Series 3

Filmed using time-lapse, slow-motion capture, step printing, and real-time capture at The Parklands’ Woodland Garden and a farm in Boston, Kentucky.

We used this specific project to create an abstract narrative allowing the viewer the ability to pass through time and reflect on their own relationship with nature.

MIM Series 3 was presented at 21C Museum and Hotels as a part of the New Lens series in June 2019.

Composer: Daniel Gilliam
Dancers: Ashley Thursby and Ryo Suzuki
Musicians: Rachel Grimes with NouLou Chamber Players
Videographer: Milan Misko

COMMITMENT | GRIT | PERSEVERENCE

Growing up in rural Missouri, ballet wasn’t necessarily top on the list as far as career paths were concerned. This changed the moment I experienced ballet for the first time on PBS. I knew it was my calling. From small town roots, I grew my technique and was awarded a merit scholarship that gave me the opportunity to attend Kansas City Ballet School at age 9. This springboard allowed me to visit places I had only dreamed of, and it has led to international travel as far as Tokyo, Japan.

As a female in the ballet industry, I have been under fierce competition throughout my career. I continue to seek out ways to elevate the female voice both in and outside the studio. My wish is to create performance art experiences through dynamic collaborations that ask the viewer to be fully present, and willing to see something new. I believe movement experiences give a sense of agency to the participant, in addition to promoting better awareness, communication, and health.

I want everyone to experience the power built from connecting the mind and body through movement.

My mission is to create space for individuals to mindfully connect to movement whether it be through observation or physical engagement.

Stay tuned for more and come along for the ride…it’s just beginning!
